Exclusion zones on Iron Cove
The construction of the new bridge over Iron Cove means there are exclusion zones on the water.  These zones are for the safety of waterway users and the construction workers.  Exclusion zones are in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The exclusion zones are being coordinated so that there are always at least two navigable channels open for waterway passage. A navigable channel is the waterway passage between any two adjacent bridge piers.

Work will occur on the water of Iron Cove at various locations. As such, the two (or more) open navigable channels may not be adjacent to each other.

The construction team will, at times, need to respond to unforeseen changes in site conditions on the water. This means that changes to the exclusion zones may occur at short notice.

A four knot restriction applies to the area adjacent to the exclusion zone. Flashing marker buoys mark out these areas. Please slow down and follow the signs.

The RTA is keeping waterway users informed
The RTA needs to inform waterway users as quickly as possible of changes to the navigable channels under the Iron Cove Bridge. The following measures were prepared in consultation with NSW Maritime:

1. Each pier on the existing bridge is numbered. Each pier on the new bridge will be numbered.

2. Whenever the exclusion zone is changed:

  • an email will be sent with a map of the new arrangement,

  • an SMS alert will be sent to registered stakeholders three days before the exclusion zone is changed. All notices will be uploaded to the RTA and NSW Maritime websites.

3. If it is necessary to change the exclusion zones at short notice:

  • an SMS alert will be sent,

  • an email will be sent to registered stakeholders with a map of which channels will be open for waterway passage and when the change will become effective. All notices will be uploaded to the RTA and NSW Maritime websites as soon as possible.

Please travel safely on the water at all times
At all times, in all circumstances, observe the navigation controls and approach the area near Iron Cove Bridge with caution. All work will be conducted in accordance with safety and emergency response procedures described in the project’s safety management plans.

Please register with the RTA’s waterway user group
Waterway users are encouraged to register with the project’s waterway user group to receive regular email and SMS notifications about changes to the exclusion zones at Iron Cove. To register call the community relations team on 1300 780 841 or email victoriaroad@btba.com.au.
