Frequently Asked Questions

View our Frequently Asked Questions below

General
When will the project be completed?
The Inner West Busway is programmed to be opened to traffic in early 2011 with restoration of public amenities such as King George Park and Brett Park to follow soon after.

Can the bus lane also be used as a T3 lane?
No. The bus lane will replace the T3 lane; however three lanes are being retained for general traffic.
What will happen to the construction site in King George Park at the completion of the project?

A new playground will be built and the King George Park area used as a site office and construction zone will be fully restored. A master plan for the restoration of King George Park will be developed by Leichhardt Council in consultation with the community.

Will the Inner West Busway increase the traffic carrying capacity of Victoria Road during the AM peak?
The Inner West Busway will not increase the traffic carrying capacity or the traffic mix on Victoria Road during AM peak. It will provide a new citybound bus lane without reducing the number of citybound general traffic lanes.
Will any improvements be made to the Lyons Road intersection?
The westbound left turn slip lane from Lyons Road on to Victoria Road has been removed and improvements made to the existing layout of traffic signals, including formalising the bus bay. Turning left at Lyons Road on to Victoria Road at the traffic lights is permitted.
Noise Management
What measures are in place to reduce the impact of noise during construction?

Noise mitigation measures include:

  • Modifying construction activities to provide respite from the noisy works.
  • Managing selection and use of equipment efficiently to reduce noise generation.
  • Programming noisiest work during the daytime and or before midnight wherever possible.
  • Implementing control measures such as noise barriers, noise monitoring in residential areas and use of low noise equipment.
  • Installing permanent noise reduction measures such as architectural acoustic treatment to eligible properties early in the construction program to minimise operational noise.
  • Offering temporary accommodation in special circumstances.
Will traffic noise levels increase on Victoria Road once the Inner West Busway is fully operational?
Traffic noise levels are only predicted to increase by a very small amount, 10 years after the project is completed in 2011. This is a result of traffic increases stemming from population growth and land use changes not attributable to the project.
Rozelle roadworks
Why has the right turn into Gordon and Evans streets been restricted?
The right turn lanes into Gordon Street (citybound) and Evans Street (westbound) were removed to facilitate the operation of the AM peak citybound bus lane through Rozelle.
Will the temporary staircase located underneath Iron Cove Bridge in Rozelle stay?
The staircase has been built as a temporary feature for alternate access during construction of the new bridge over Iron Cove. The RTA will consider leaving them in place if requested by Leichhardt Council.
Drummoyne roadworks
Will Brett Park car park be restored as park land upon completion of the project?
Following the completion of the Inner West Busway, the RTA will restore the park, as requested by Canada Bay Council.
What will be the new traffic arrangements at the intersection of Cary Street and Victoria Road?
Cary Street access to Victoria Road citybound will be closed in the AM peak weekdays between 6 and 10am to maximise bus lane safety and efficiency.
Will pedestrians be able to access the Birkenhead Point side of Iron Cove Bridge from the new bridge over Iron Cove?
A new ramp will be built as part of the project’s cyclist and pedestrian improvements. It will link the new bridge over Iron Cove to the Bay Run on Henley Marine Drive, Drummoyne. Access between Birkenhead Point and the Bay Run via Henley Marine Drive will be retained.
At what time of the day will parking restrictions be in place in Drummoyne following the opening of the busway?
For the Inner West Busway to operate without reducing the number of lanes available for general traffic, additional parking restrictions will be introduced in Drummoyne in the counter peak direction. Clearway (Bus Lane) restrictions will be in effect in both directions in the morning peak (5.30 – 10am) and the evening peak (3 – 7pm).
Marine construction including the new bridge over Iron Cove
What measures are in place to manage potential environmental impacts of construction of the new bridge on the waters of Iron Cove?
Management measures have been implemented to minimise the likelihood of disturbing sediments. Sediment booms and curtains will contain any disturbed sediments to the immediate work area.
Weekly water monitoring is undertaken to assess the effectiveness of these controls. Water monitoring is undertaken at each of the marine work sites in Iron Cove, including land and marine bridgework sites.
How are exclusion zones being managed during construction of the bridge?
Exclusion zones are being coordinated so that there are always at least two navigable channels open for waterway passage. A navigable channel is the waterway passage between any two adjacent bridge piers. A four knot restriction applies to the area adjacent to the exclusion zone. Flashing marker buoys mark out these areas.

Before an exclusion zone is changed, an email will be sent with a map of the new arrangement and an SMS alert will be sent to those individuals and groups who have registered in the project’s waterway user group three days before the exclusion zone is changed. All notices will be uploaded to the RTA and NSW Maritime websites. The same process will be followed when the exclusion is required to be changed at short notice.

All work will be conducted in accordance with safety and emergency response procedures described in the project’s safety management plans.
